A venue for global performances and collaborations

Dar al Funoon will host opera, ballet, theatre, concerts, and other live performances throughout the year. The venue will also support artist residencies and international cultural collaborations.

The design takes inspiration from music and performance, with a transparent façade representing Abu Dhabi's role as a centre for cultural exchange. The project is one of Frank Gehry's final works, adding to his legacy of landmark cultural projects. Gehry also designed the nearby Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which is currently under construction.

Context

A new cultural addition to Saadiyat Island

Dar al Funoon joins a growing collection of cultural institutions that have turned Saadiyat Island into one of Abu Dhabi's key cultural destinations. The area already includes:

  • Louvre Abu Dhabi — opened in 2017, drawing over 1.2 million visitors annually.
  • Zayed National Museum — a Foster + Partners project celebrating Sheikh Zayed and Emirati heritage.
  • Guggenheim Abu Dhabi — another Gehry design, currently under construction.
  • Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi — featuring "Stan" the T. rex and exhibits on Earth's history.
  • teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi — an interactive digital art museum.

With Dar al Funoon, Saadiyat will expand its cultural offering by adding a dedicated venue for opera, theatre, concerts, and other live performances.

Saadiyat Island's residential growth

Cultural developments and property demand

Saadiyat Island's residential growth has been closely connected to the development of its cultural district. New attractions have helped increase interest in nearby properties. Dar al Funoon will bring a new audience to the island through opera, ballet, and live performances, creating more activity around the area beyond its existing museums and galleries.

The project also adds another amenity for residents, while its long-term influence on property demand will become clearer as the venue moves closer to opening.
